Veneer Specification

Description

Pale pinkish tan to light reddish brown medium density hardwood. Faint to medium reddish brown diffused growth rings when plain sliced. Low occurrence of natural figure. No visible transition between Heartwood and Sapwood. Various size dull medium brown colored streaks naturally occurring and oriented with grain direction. Fine, straight grain surface texture.

Woodport Grade

Rustic. Uniformity Density = 4.0/Square Foot.

Flitches may be composed of both Sapwood and Heartwood. Color shall be uniform with no areas of dark brown or grey colored stain. No yellow discoloration, dry rot or decay. Natural characteristics such as figures, burls and knots are allowed, as specified. The allowance of sugar stains, bark pockets, grain ruptures, pith centers, cracks and worm holes creates visual interest. Minimize trimming and splicing veneer through figures, burls, knots and stains. All voids to be structurally sound with no areas of rot or decay. Voids which expose core material shall be filled and sanded, as specified. Note: All voids associated with figures and knots to be filled with Black colored paint. All remaining open voids to be filled with Cherry colored putty. Natural characteristics shall appear random, not patterned, across the surface of the finished component and result in a overall pleasing to the eye, finished component appearance.

Not Allowed

  • Yellow Color
  • Dark Brown Stain
  • Grey Stain

Allowed

Knife / Machining Marks:

Shallow surface imperfections in veneer flitch which may be removed through light surface sanding are allowable.

All figures with open voids to a diameter of 3", star cracks and grain ruptures in which core material is exposed shall be repaired with paint or spray, color Black. Surface of repaired area shall be sanded per Woodport Operating Procedure OP-1703, Orbital Sander Operation. Repair must be structurally sound and closed. Repaired area shall blend naturally and not appear conspicuous in color, size or shape. All figures must appear random, not patterned across the surface of the finished component. Maximum number of figures per finished component as stated below.

Knots with open voids to a diameter of 3", star cracks and ruptured grain in which core material is exposed shall be repaired with paint or spray, color Black. Surface of repaired area shall be sanded per Woodport Operating Procedure OP-1703, Orbital Sander Operation. Repair must be structurally sound and closed. Repaired area shall blend naturally and not appear conspicuous in color, size or shape. All knots must appear random, not patterned across the surface of the finished component. Maximum number allowable per grouping as stated below.

Mineral Streak:

Naturally occurring mineral streaks and small, non-repairable voids which appear as solid dark brown or black colored lines are allowed. Must be oriented with the grain of the veneer. Allowable up to 1/16" in width. No limitations with regards to allowable length or occurrence. Must not be tightly grouped or patterned. Mineral streaks shall not detract from the finished component appearance.

Small Voids (Repairable)

Small voids in the veneer stemming from honeycomb, ruptured grain, cracks, worm holes, bird peck and pin knots are allowable. Voids greater than 1/32", (heavy pencil line), to which core material is exposed must be repaired with Cherry color putty. Repair shall be surface sanded with a orbital sander per Woodport Operating Procedure OP-1703, Orbital Sander Operation. After repair, void must be structurally sound and closed. Repairs may not exceed 1/16" in width or 3/4" in overall length. Number of repaired voids will vary per flitch. Size and occurrence must not detract from the overall finished component appearance.

Veneer Splicing

Veneer shall be spliced to provide a pleasing to the eye appearance. Veneer shall be composed of Heartwood flitches selected to best match color and grain pattern. Veneer with Benin vertical figuring shall be book matched spliced. All veneer shall be spliced so as not to create a unnatural or stark contrast of color, grain or figure. Veneer grain shall be oriented vertically with length of component. Flitches shall not be trimmed or spliced through a figure, knot or stain greater than 1/16" in width.

Veneer Flitch Sizing

Minimum Flitch Width Allowed: 5"

Widths up to 7": No splice allowed

Widths 8" - 13": One splice allowed, centered to overall sheet width. Trim final veneer sheet from both sides to provide flitches of nearly equal width, (+/- 1/4"), and balanced finished appearance.

Widths 14" and Up: Minimum 5" flitch width. Not to exceed 5 total flitches per finished veneer sheet. Individual veneer flitches shall be nearly equal in width, (+/- 1/4"), to provide a balanced appearance.

Veneer Glue Line

Glue line shall be continuous, structurally sound with no separation or voids between flitches. Glue line must not be visible after finish sanding. Minimize excess adhesive on surfaces of veneer flitch and finished component.
